Increase Your Tire Traction with Grooves and Sipes

Dirt track conditions shift from wet and muddy to hard and dusty, affecting tire traction. Experienced racers enhance grip by grooving (cutting rubber from tread) or siping (making thin cuts without removing material) tires. These modifications improve traction, heat tires faster, or extend tire life by running cooler, depending on cut size and direction.

Grooving and siping are skills honed through trial and error. Racers log track conditions and cuts to optimize performance. Consult fellow racers or tire manufacturers for advice. Regrooving worn tires can also save costs compared to buying new ones.

The Super Siper tool, with its ergonomic aluminum body and curved nylon base, handles tough tire siping. It uses standard utility knife blades and supports up to six blades, spaced 0.14 inches apart in two groups, with a 5/8-inch gap. Removing center blades adjusts spacing to 0.28 inches. Depth is set via thumb screws, typically 1/8 to 3/16 inches, up to half the tread depth, ideal for dirt or off-road tires.

Applications:
600 Micro Sprints, Sprint Cars, Misgets, Junior Sprints, Go Karts, Sanctioning bodies like IMCA, Wissota, USRA, USMTS, and UMP allow grooving/siping in specific classes.
